I’ve heard about this kid in the gossip columns and seen him in the computer games, but now I’m finally convinced. After scoring a hat-trick last night for Racing against Cruzeiro in the Copa Libertadores, Lautaro Martinez showed South America that he is the real deal. Continue reading

Série A 2017 preview
Brazilfooty is back and the Brazilian 2017 Série A kicks off this weekend. To mark both of these highly auspicious events in global football, Brazilfooty has prepared an in-depth Série A review. It has been a herculean effort for a part-time blogger: social plans were cancelled; reluctant support from an unimpressed girlfriend was obtained; football almanacs were dusted off and scanned from cover to cover; match reports read; team rosters inspected; fan forums observed; journalists interviewed; hours of TV footage reviewed; player dossiers complied; and an excessive amount of stroking of the chin while looking ponderously into the air and uttering ‘hmmmmm’ was done. The result is a thorough review of all 20 Série A teams. Continue reading

For a full explanation on Brazilian football and all of the club competitions see this link. Continue reading

After months of football, the Brazilian State Championships came to a dramatic close today. Starting in São Paulo, Santos won the local competition for the second successive year, beating Corinthians 2-1 in a tense but ultimately low quality game of football. Continue reading
State Champs: stuck with the wrong match
The afternoon got off to a terrible start with the news that Corinthians would be wearing jerseys with their mothers’ names on the back as a Mother’s Day tribute. I needed to call on all my powers of concentration to get this shockingly lame marketing gimmick out of my head and focus on the important afternoon of football ahead, starting 16:00 local time. And what an afternoon it promised to be: Corinthians vs. Santos, Internacional vs. Grêmio and Atlético Mineiro vs. Cruzeiro to name just a few of the mouth-watering ties. Continue reading
Brazilian Copa (it’s a disgrace) Libertadores disaster
Four Brazilian clubs were dumped out of the Copa Libertadores in spectacular fashion last night. Going into the evening’s games, only Grêmio had a difficult first leg score to overturn. Internacional lost 2-1 (3-2 agg) at home to Peí±arol, Cruzeiro lost 2-0 (3-2 on agg) at home to Once Caldas and Fluminense were humiliated 3-0 (4-3 agg) against Libertad in Paraguay. Grêmio lost their away match against Universidad Católica from Chile 1-0 and 3-1 on aggregate. Continue reading

But that’s no excuse so let me give you a quick rundown of the Libertadores action so far this week. Continue reading
