Muricy Ramalho comfirmed as coach of Santos

Can Muricy bring some organization to Santos? (Getty Images)

After quitting Fluminense last month due to inadequate training facilities and broken promises from the clubs directors, Muricy Ramalho has been confirmed as the new coach of Santos. Famously and ironically, Muricy rejected the chance to coach Brazil last year (he was the football federations first choice ahead of current coach Mano Menezes) in order to honour is word and contract with Fluminense.

Santos, meanwhile, are desperate for a good coach and some organization on the field. In Muricy, they may have just found their man. They sacked Adilson Batista earlier this season after poor performances and bureaucratic football. Since then, Santos have been a shambles quite frankly. They have an amazingly talented group of young players but there is no cohesion or discipline on the field. If Muricy is one thing, it is a good organizer. He is also a defensive coach by nature and Santos are an attacking team by nature. One could complement the other quite nicely, perhaps? Of course, the opposite could happen and it all ends in tears. I say that given time and a little cash (to buy one or two decent defenders and an experienced midfielder), it could just work out nicely. A lot could depend on how they fare in the Copa Libertadores and whether the club can hang on to Neymar and Ganso.

Santos play Colo Colo in a crunch Libertadores game today and although Muricy will only lead the team on the weekend, his presence in the stands could be a big boost to the players (and fans)!

  1. Well, what I heard was the club promised him new training facilities. They didn’t deliver. Players were getting injured because of the poor facilities. He got fed up because of it and told them where to go!
